ARC, out 5 months

I visited China for 5 months, my passport was stamped "ARC, out 5 months" when I returned. Please explain what that meant.

ARC means that he is a permanent resident (ARC = Alien Resident Card).

The IO noticed that he is staying long periods of time outside the USA, he better stay in the USA for the next year or so... no absences for longer than 3 months.
