approval when you are abroad

ND: Sept 5th 2001
FP date : 8th May 2002

I am going abroad for a month in may and was wondering if luck favors that my case could be approved before my return.

1) do i have to be in USA when my case is approved.?

2)INS would not know of my leaving the country so the processing would continue...right??
