Applying for Surrender Certificate before obtaining US passport

In this Surrender Certificate requirement era, has anyone applied for their SC prior to receiving their US passport in hand? The CGI-NY says that the Indian passport needs to be surrendered within 90 days of acquiring US citizenship even if the US passport is obtained later. In the interest of saving time, I intend to apply for the damn SC simultaneously as my US passport application. On the SC application form, I intend to state that US passport not yet applied for in the section that asks for US passport details. I would like to know if anyone has already gone through this approach I intend on doing and if so, what your experience was. Thanks.

I have sent my application on 5/18 but I have not received anything back. Surrender certificate form has been changing on daily basis, and when I applied it did not ask for a copy but you never know.
I will call them coming week if nothing happens

Thanks dr_rks, please do keep me posted here on what happens but good luck to you ... hopefully no major delays. I've got to assume that there are more people doing this because it makes absolute sense to save time this way.

dr_rks,

You might receive your's shortly by mail, why i am saying this is....

When i went to CGI-NY on 29th (my SC application was received by cgi-ny on 20 may), one of the consulate employee looked for it and it was all ready to be posted back to me... she even handed over the USPS mailing slip along with my application contents... :)

I hope this give you some idea and relief.... I just guess basing on your application dates....

:)

Can I go to NY consulate and apply for my wife's renunciation certificate?

Nervous because we have to travel to India July 9th. By then, need to get the renunciation and then the entry visa!

I was at the NYC consulate today to get the surrender certificate - brutal experience.
I got there at 11am - already a huge line moving at snails pace. And it was very sunny and humid out.
After a lot of frustration and B.S. finally got processed and received the certificate at 4pm.

Volume was high because of the recent announcements so hopefully it should be quicker for folks who go in the future.
