Applying for Naturalization

Hi,

I'm permanent resident since 02/2004 but was out of the country for 2 years with permission for extension and then came back in Nov 2006. I have completed 4 years and 9 months since Nov 2006 and have not been out of country for more than 6 months during this period.

In the Document Checklist document for N-400 it says following:

If you have taken any trip outside the United States that lasted 6 months or more since becoming a Lawful Permanent
Resident, send evidence that you (and your family) continued to live, work and/or keep ties to the United States, such as:
1) An IRS tax return “transcript” or an IRS-certified tax return listing tax information for the last 5 years (or for the last 3 years if
you are applying on the basis of marriage to a U.S. citizen).
2) Rent or mortgage payments and pay stubs.

Do I need to submit any document if I have not been out of country for more than 6 months in last 5 years? If so then which document should I submit?

Thanks for the help.

No you don't need to submit anything to account for your trips of more than 5 years ago, unless you failed to file taxes or the unusual event where the interviewer requests it.

But it says "If you have taken any trip outside the United States that lasted 6 months or more since becoming a Lawful Permanent Resident". It says since becoming Lawful Permanent Resident and not last 5 years and as I said I was out for 2 years from 2004 to 2006.

Yes it says that, but in practice it's unnecessary because the main reason for submitting those old tax returns and other ties of residence is to show that you didn't break continuous residence. Given that continuous residence is based on the last 5 years, it's only in unusual circumstances that they will request that kind of evidence for time periods further back than 5 years before the filing date (such as one recent poster who filed taxes as a non-resident more than 5 years ago, despite having a GC at the time). So if you don't have any such circumstances, don't send anything for that and don't worry about it.
