applying for I-485 & EAD on F1

I am on F1 and we are filing for I-485 and EAD through my spouse with employment based GC. After we file for I-485, will I lose my F1 status? I will start my Post Doctorate in Jan 2008. Can I do my Post Doc and join as Asst. Professor later, on EAD? Or can I maintain my own status of H1 during Post Doc and start GC processing independently? I am into academics and I understand that it takes lesser time to get GC.

I greatly appreciate any responses to my doubts.
 
You can choose to persue your studies on EAD/485 status however, maintaining an H1 is always better while you 485 is pending.
