Applying AP while H1-B extension is pending

Hi Folks,
I see H1-B approval notice as one of the document needed while applying for AP document. I recently applied for H1 extension but only have the receipt notice & the previous H-1 already expired. Can I still apply for AP or Do I have to wait for the H1-B approval?

Any advise from anyone who have been in this situation before is appreciated..
