Apply for SS

Hi,

I landed in USA on Jan 26th 2000 on H1 work visa, and my DOB is 1st May 1974. Did I need to apply for selective services at that time?
Someone said even if you are exempt from applying for it, you need to send application :confused:
Right now i am <3 years away to apply USC, so should i apply for SS now? or wait to apply before sending N400.

I have answered this question before. You really don't need to worry about SS unless you were illegally present here. When you file for GC, USCIS automatically registers you for SS if you were below 26 when you got GC, else they don't, so basically they are taking care of this requirement for you.
 
Selective Service registration is NOT required while you are on H1B, but you do need it as soon as you obtain your GC if you are 26 or under.

I can't say for definite if USCIS does register people automatically as I was already past the max age when obtained my GC. Either way, you probably shouldn't rely on them getting it right on your behalf.
