If I lost my greencard and I am applying for citizenship, how necessary is it to now apply for a greencard that will not be valid? I paid $400 to apply for the N400 and will have to pay $260 for a greencard that is not even valid.

If you are applying for citizenship, you'll need to provide a photocopy of your green card...so, I'm not sure what you mean by an invalid green card.

You'll need to show your green card at time of interview as well and then when you take the oath, you surrender your green card. I don't think they'll let you into the oath without your green card.

Anyway, if you did lose your green card, you are suppose to apply for a new one.

By invalid, I meant that I am paying $260 for a greencard that will be taken away from me during the oath. I do have photocopies of it back and front.

Even if you have a photocopy of your green card (front and back), you'll still need a green card to show to the officer at time of interview.

Looking at the naturalization guide, it only talks about expired green cards not having to be renewed if N400 application was sent in 6 months or more before expire date.

Since you don't actually have your green card, you most likely will need to get a replacement and pay the $260 to get it.

In my opinion, I'd rather get that done and not have to deal with any hassles that the immigration will give you either at interview time or oath time....but that's just me.
