No. Your current SSN is fine. I still use the SS Card I got when I came here on a J-1 in 1993. No problems at all. I haven't been to a SS Office since 1993.

Till you get your GC, you should be using SSN with restriction even though you are on EAD. once you get your GC, you can go to SS office and have the condition removed.

Yeah, but as he's not got his green card yet its not relevant. Actually even when you have your green card its not that necessary to have the restrictions removed from your SS card. In fact I've even heard of people who have been refused a new card by the SS office.

That SSO was misguided in it refusal to issue a new card to the person, because they are required to remove the nonsense from all SSC of immigrants in this country.
People whose SSC have NOT VALID FOR WORK WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION are for non-immigrants, so what the SSO does is just to take the card, reverse the same numbers that you have, and remove the nonsense on the card, and issue you a new card with the same number but reversed a little bit...
For example, your SSN is 087 455 6690, what SSO will do is just: 087 455 6609 and anyone who run your SSN for any purpose, it will appear as if it is the same old number, and no one will ever know that it was ever changed by SS Office. In anyway, SSO employees at times are full of hot air, and when an uninformed immigrant visits their office, blowing it to them comes naturally to them.... 
In addition to gassing them with all kinds of misinformation....

You know I love to have a good laugh and fun, but here I am not joking...
No... I am serious, they just change a number or two, just reverse, depending on what their computer system has available. I know of people whose number was just changed a little bit with a single digit, but it is somehow linked to the old number by the SS office system.You have to go to the social security office once you receive your GC. I had SSN when I was on my H1B, but after receiving GC, I went back to Soc. sec office. They updated my file using the Green card, but not my number. They asked me to come back again after I became U.S.citizen, so they could update their files. So, according to what I was told, when your status changes the social security office expects you to inform them of that.
There is no need for that.
