I applied for a J1 visa at Frankfurt, Germany on 9th May 2006 (to work as a research scholar in US). After the interview, they informed me that it will take around four weeks of time for the processing. But still to date (after 7 weeks), I did not hear anything from them. More over, my German visa is valid only up to 30th June 2006 and my passports are with US Consulate.
Although I contacted them by phone (which was a call centre in germany, they replied that they do not know anything and only answer is WAIT FOR SOME MORE TIME). I also send two e-mails to the consulate explaining my situation. But still there is no reply from them. Can anyone help me? How can I proceed further ??
Normally how much time it will take for a J1 Visa?

By the way, I am from India, working as a research scholar in Germany from last two years.

Hi,

I am a german citizen. I also applied for a J1-Visa at the US embassy in Frankfurt two years ago. It took only one day to get my J1-visa.

You should send a letter by mail to the us embassy.
In August 2002 I also applied for my first j1-visa there. I sent them a letter and inquired about my visa after four weeks not receiving the visa. A couple days later, they did sent me my visa.

Anytime you are not a citizen of the country that you are in when you apply for a US visa there is an increased chance of delays. If they want to run a background check on a german national, they just send the information to their liasion in the respective german goverment agency and because they work with them on a day to day basis things go smooth. If they have to check on someones background in a third country, they probably have to go through some central DOS office.
Tough spot. I know they don't take walk-in appointments at the consulate, but I have made the experience that actual humans work at US goverment agencies and if you make it past the guard without an appointment letter and you are able to plead your case to a consular officer, maybe they can at least give you your passport back so you can file for an extension of your stay in germany.

Dear hadron

Thanks for your message.

luckily I could able to get the temorary residence permit (german) from the local foreign office by explaining my current situation !!!!!!!! (without having passports !!!).

I have an another question. The starting date on DS2019 form was 1st July. If I dont get my visa before that time (or even upto 15th July), do I get new DS2019 form ?? Could you tell me about this ???

Well, they have you in their computer for your current residence and work permit. They also tend to be lenient with professionals who work for corporations or universities. Oh, and just like in the US immigration service you will encounter understanding humans once in a while.

I think it remains the same DS2019.
Don't get too worked up about this. When I switched from my J1 to H1b I received the approval of the J1 waiver AND the visa on the same day, my first day of work.
