Application to Preserve Residence for Naturalization

Hi,
I came across an interesting option in form N-470.
If a permanent resident is absent from US for a long period in the capacity as

clergyman
missionary
brother
nun
sister

Their absence is not counted towards Naturalization requirement. All of that period still adds to the 5year requirement.

On this basis can a person of Hindu religion (permanent resident) who wants to preserve Hinduism, go back to India to learn scriptures under a Hindu organization for an year or so and come back to continue religious work in US and his absence is not counted toward Naturalization requirement ?

According to US constitution for immigration purposes or otherwise, their options cannot be discriminated based on the religion. If Christians are given such options, Hindus should've the same options right?

Thanks in advance for any enlightening answers.

Form N-470, Application to Preserve Residence for Naturalization Purposes, must be received by INS prior to the person's leaving the US on the trip. The person must be official "CLERGY" and the trip overseas must be for official ministerial duties that laymen cannot accomplish. The directions accompanying the form (available online at INS web site) indicate the clerical position must be a position of employment for the religious organization. Supporting documentation must include letter on official letterhead concerning the employment and duties that are religious in nature. The employment appears to need to be for the entire period overseas.

Considering original question: answer is: "NO, an LPR cannot preserve their residence for naturalization purposes based upon returning to home country to study religious scriptures and preserve the religion, unless that LPR is CLERGY and will be accomplishing Ministerial Duties that the general membership cannot perform."
