Application questions and the like

Hey guys,

Would really appreciate it if someone could clarify and/or offer suggestions for some of the following doubts:

1. I'm a little confused about the fingerprinting/police certificate issue. Some people say it's okay to send them later while the new application checklist from CIC mentions that they must be included with the application. Is there a right or wrong way?

2. I have a bachelor's degree from the US (transferred some credits over to get it). It's a regular 4 year degree from a recognized university. Should I claim 20 points or 22 (since a 4 year degree gives me 16 years of education)?

3. In regards to the above, if I claim 22 points, and show a total points tally of 73, but then the assessing officer disagrees and awards only 20 points for education (thus lowering my total tally to 71 points), does that imply that the application will be rejected because I did not meet my claimed total points of 73 (even though when it's reduced to 71, it's still above the 67 point mark)?

4. One question in the application form (Q.19 in form IMM 0008) asks for information about any ID issued by a foreign government. Does that include a US driver's license and/or Social Security card?

5. If one doesn't have a birth certificate (I'm getting one, but it won’t be here for a couple of months), is there any alternate set of documents that will work for the immigration application purpose?

Would really appreciate information from all of the experienced veterans of the Canadian immigration process who help people like us here. Thanks in advance for your help. You guys do a great job and keep a lot of people going.

As you have mentioned that "the new application checklist from CIC mentions that they must be included with the application" so send the FBI clearance with the initial application.

2. I have a bachelor's degree from the US (transferred some credits over to get it). It's a regular 4 year degree from a recognized university. Should I claim 20 points or 22 (since a 4 year degree gives me 16 years of education)?

I believe you will get 20 points as you fall under the category "You have a university degree of two years or more at the bachelor’s level and at least 14 years of full-time or full-time equivalent study"

Selection criteria is simple - if the immigration officer gives you more than 67 points (as of now) and feels that you can settle down in Canada you will get PR. You DO NOT set your own qualifying points. By the way how can you claim any points? Is there any section in the forms where you have been asked how many points you score?

Just for your information if the points increase in future and your application is in process your application will be effected by the change.

4. One question in the application form (Q.19 in form IMM 0008) asks for information about any ID issued by a foreign government. Does that include a US driver's license and/or Social Security card?

No idea

5. If one doesn't have a birth certificate (I'm getting one, but it won’t be here for a couple of months), is there any alternate set of documents that will work for the immigration application purpose?

You can provide alternated documents and write an explanation letter informing them that you will provide the birth certificate as soon as you get it.

Kenny04,

Thanks a ton for taking the time to reply. Really helps. As for your question to me about where I can claim points - good catch - I can't - but I can assume a certain number of points. Probably needed to rephrase that question.

Also, as for substitute documents in lieu of the birth certificate - will an affidavit do for now, you think? When I get the original I'll send it along.

Lastly, if there's anybody else out there who can help answer the following question, I'd appreciate it:

'Q.19 in form IMM 0008 asks for information about any ID issued by a foreign government. Does that include a US driver's license and/or Social Security card?'

Thanks again for your help.
