Application ID vs Receipt Number

I sent my N-400 application out on 12/30/2009, and it is received at Phoenix on 01/04/2010.

Up to now, the check hasn't been cashed. So I called USCIS yesterday. The good thing is they seem to have really received it. The person on the phone
gave me a "Application ID" that is NBC*000xxxxxx. He did say this is not
a receipt number. But from what I read here, receipt numbers are in this
format too.

Do you guys know the difference? Does an "Application ID" eventually turn into a "Receipt Number"?

Thanks.

Let me get this straight, u mailed it during the end of the year postal mad rush, was received on 01/04/10 and you have already called them to asked them for what? So much for patience with anything these days... I wonder where in the world will you be when people waited 2 years for their citizenship process to be complete or years to get a mere greencard, you will be dead and a snack in a sushi bar...:) Just buckled up and drink fruit juices for patience...:(

There will be two NBC#'s on a case receipt. The one on the top left is the case number that starts with NBC*........ Then there is another number on the bottom that starts with NBC$.......Some people say the NBC$ is an internal tracking number for payments. If you wrote a personal check, check your bank account. If you included a cashier's check or MO, see if it cashed. Else, give few more days to get case receipt.
