application for extension applied and if i have to go on an international project, can i return to U

My H1 B expires end of July and i might be on an international project then, can i enter the US after the expiration of my H1 on the basis that my application for extension is pending, or do i have to receive an extension to be able to do so.
Please answer
And also how easy is it to get on to an tourist visa immediately after H1 expiration, in order to wind up stuff in US??

If u need to enter US, you need to have a valid visa stamp on your passport. If u are out of the country during the filing of your extension, you will have to get your company to send you the approval papers in order for you to be back. B1/B2 should not be a problem (depending on your country)
