I also needed to visit back home for a relatively minor medical emergency and had a tried for emergency AP at the Dallas local office (my AP application ND is 07/25/2003). I carried a letter faxed by the doctor with me and they told me that they would give me an emergency AP but it would be single-entry and valid only for a month and my application at the TSC would be automaticallly revoked if I got this one. I just decided to wait out a few more weeks since I was told that given the status of my original application at that point, I would probably even get the original AP by the first week of December. Of course, that hasn't happened either
The bottomline is that if you are ok with getting only a month AP and then reapplying afresh, you should be fine. But make sure you carry evidence of the emergency..All the best
