AP expired...stuck in Canada...please advice !!!

Hi guys,

One of my friend who is a Canadian Citizen flew to Canada as usual being a Canadian Citizen. He has totally forgotten that his AP has expired in October 2008. His EAD is valid until Aug 2010. He was stopped at the border saying that he needs AP to re-enter US. What are his options now?

Appreciate your thoughts guys.
 
How did he get his EAD and AP? Was it through marriage? What was his status in the US before he travelled? Need to know the answers to further help you
