AP/EAD Renewals at TSC

Can someone please tell me whether or not you must surrender your AP and/or EAD when applying for a renewal of each???

I had my EAD & AP renewed twice through a lawyer. However, I never had to give him my original EAD or AP. I remember sending him a copy of EAD, not too sure if I sent him a copy of AP.
In any case, you would never have to mail in your original EAD or AP.

Elsewhere, I read, that it is not a great idea to send originals of anything to INS.
