AP approval while outside US

Does anyone have any experience with getting back into the country with an AP that was approved/renewed while out of the country? What are the alternatives in these situations? Will they outright reject you at the port of entry, or can there be exceptions? Since AP's are taking so long to get approved these days, some ppl might face this situation in the coming months if they must travel abroad on urgent matters.

If you leave the U.S. while the AP is pending, your AP application is deemed abandoned.
