AP and number of months overseas

Can you please let me know, for many many months we can stay outside US, with an AP.

My wife wants to stay for 6 months, as she has to give her exams.

but advisable to not stay longer than 6 months...

Make sure that her AP is not expiring in 3 months before coming back to US.
 
You should be able to re-enter upto the date that the AP expires. I traveled back in the first week of March this year on AP, with the AP expiring in first week of May, so I don't think that you need 3 months before AP expires (as you have a valid I485 adjustment status after re-entry).

On a practical note though, it is important to not cut it too close to AP expiry, to give yourself time to reschedule travel if something happens (such as flight cancellations, airline going kaput, or anything else in home country).
 
We had initial AP issued on April 3, 2002 and valid up to April 2 , 2003. My wife entered USA back after 8 months in March 2003. We had no problems so far..

Are there any potential problems you guys see?
