Anyone with experience in Newark for EAD extension (After 90 days)

My EAD expired as of Jan/9/2001. I applied 3 months back (receipt date Oct/11/2000). I haven\'t got the approval yet. I have heard somewhere on this board that you can physically goto Newark and get the EAD card if you\'ve filed for more than 90 days.

I need your help in handling this situation. Please tell me what I need to carry and what time I should go to Newark. Any more details are welcome.

Thanks,

Hey Mera:
I do not have a personal experience with EAD renewal after 90days, but I would think the following should happen based on previous experiences at Newark I had gone there for AP. You should go very early there is a huge line I had to go twice the first day was just a looking day I had gone there at 7:00AM thinking that was early but I was late, try to be there atleast around 5:30AM I know I sound rediculous but you will be surprised when you go there at that time you are not the only one( I learned this from my wife\'s comment althought she complains that I don\'t listen to her).

And take with you all the documents that you had sent to VSC two photographs, copy of your 485 receipt, filled application for ead renewal form, copy of you expired EAD and also the copy of your receipt of your EAD renewal at VSC, and perhaps the application fee of $100 per application which can be a cheque. There is an inital processsing window where they give you a ticket number at that point they screen your application and you should be very firm there and respond to IIO in a firm and convincing manner don\'t be too aggresive or cocky be positive and firm and give facts if you have to and dont say anything more than what they ask, and it there that determines pretty much whether you will get in or not. When once you pass that point I think you will get it, its just a waste of time after that , you will be there with the adjucating officer then they will send you upstairs the whole thing might take till 3:00 Pm max.

The reason why I am saying all this is Newark office is nasty and cutthroat if you show weakness either in your talk or actions they can take you for a ride, I had that experience when I went for AP she said I filed my 485 in Vermont and I knew what she was starting... I was very calm and firm and I told her that its an emergency that\'s why I came to Newark and besides Vermont processes cases from this region and it takes months before I can get my AP. After that it was just waiting, there is a coffee and some snacks there, my wife had packed me some parathas so I eat those there.

Hope this helps

Chutney,

Thanks for the info. I am a little puzzled though. INS has already cashed my check for $100. Also regarding the receipt that came with original EAD was also sent in the original application to VSC. I might have a copy of that.

Would I be better off waiting for the extension to be approved rather than this whole ordeal (sounds scary from your experience).

Any comments.

Hey Mera:
First thing you should never be scared this is just an information for you so you can be prepared and I did not mean to have that effect, its just that when I was in that line I noticed so many things of others it reminded me of India when you stand in a line for a movie ticket you dont know whether you will get it not or whether the guy at the window would simply shut the window and sell the tickets in black market, so take a nice book with you or a walkman with your favourite music there is also a coffee shop on broad street and also the street behind it get a coffee and read until 7:00 I think around 7:30 they open the doors. Also the cold season is upon us please make yourself warm enough to sustain the chill outside take extra coats, or even a blanket in a bag or something.

I think you should go it is not scary at all, plus you are doing the right thing by going , you have to be street smart that all, ( because somewhere around 7:30 AM some security guy will walk around the line and say and pick up some point in the line and say from here I dont think if you can get in today, come tommorow !!!!, things like that at that point you ponder whether to go home or stay in the line ) I think you do have to pay $100 that is the price ( although you might want to make a case with the adjucating officer about the fee and attach the copy of your returned check its possible that that might be waived again you have to work on that its not a given), this process should be looked as if a brand new application for EAD renewal is being made.

You don\'t need the receipt of the original EAD application, you need the receipt of the current renewal EAD\'s renewal receipt from VSC which you might have received in october, also I think you also have to do the signature card.

I would highly encourage you to go there because of the fact that you are reaching 90days of application and I dont see in another 2 weeks you getting the card, so take a day off I think wednesday\'s are bad days( by appointments only) plan for monday, tuesday, thrusday Friday , go and get it myfriend that\'s what I would do. You cannot stay back of somebody\'s experience who knows it might be just a breeze for you.

Chutney,

I like both, your attitude and suggestions. I think I am going to do that.
Thanks for the encouraging words. I will go there around 5.30 or 6am on Friday 12th and try my luck.
I will keep the receipt of my EAD renewal form and cancelled check and I585 receipt.

Will post details once I am back.

Way to go Chutney!

Just another tip for mera.
make sure you carry your ORIGINAL I-140. If you do not have it - do not go as they will never approve your EAD without this. My daughter went for her EAD renewal( even thought VSC approved it, the card had not come). The Officer asked her to come again with the original I-140 approval and all other documents in original.
Good luck!

Q104,

That is an interesting point. I will try to get my Original I-140 approval letter. However I do not understand why they would want to see it (apologies for sounding like Al Gore in his concession speach).

Any one else has any experince with EAD Renewal?

Luckily I did not have to go to Newark. I spoke to IIO today and she said that my EAD was approved on Dec 28th and it will take 3 weeks for the actual card to arrive so I guess I am just gonna chill out.

Pleasant experience at Newark INS on Oct 23, 2000. There are two ways to do it.

Send a completed new application with the fee to Newark. They will call you for an interview. Go there, show passpost, and possibly I485 and get the picture taken, get EAD get out.

Second:
Got at 4:30 AM in the morning. Stand in line, get a number at 8:30 AM go inside. Show the receipt from INS and go thru the process.

BTW, after you have filed for I-485 and you EAD expires, INS recommends that you either file with a service center or to the local INS. All the people who are in doubt should check out the INS site andthe following links for forms and submissions.

Hope this helps
