Anyone received those new Travel Documents?

JackIsBack,

My brother has applied for the RTD early june and is still waiting for the document. I will update here if he received a new one....

Jack,
I don't know why they are taking so much of time this time. Usually they issues in 4-6 weeks before. I applied on July 12 but did not get anything.

I think they now do a full-scale background check on you before issuing the document. So it is taking so damn long.

Hi all,

I think they are taking a long time to process the RTD or RP due to the shift of personel i.e officers are directed to process other cases before the 2003 fiscal year ends and I think also due to the naming confussion wheater they will call it BCIS or USCIS. I think it is illegal for them or unacceptable by Congress to produce any document that has the old name (INS or Department of justice) after October 1st of 2003. Just my opinion.

as I posted before, I applied for RTD in april and recieved in in september, and it was the old blue one, and it still has INS and DOJ name , though they tried to scrape it off

I applied on August 12, but I have not received my RTD yet. Last time, I received my RTD within 1 month.

I thought the BCIS is trying very hard to reduce backlog, but it seems to me the backlog is getting worse. I just don't understand why the RTD is only valid for a year. If the validity date is longer, at least people will not have to apply a new one every year. I am willing to double the amount I paid if I can recieve a document that valids for two years or more.

cchong,

I share your sentiments. It is ridiculous to wait for almost 6 or more months for a document that is only valid for one year. I would be willing to pay the double amount if the darn document is valid for two years. What is ridiculous because of one year validity is that I have to pay $100 for multiple entry canadian visa ...Every year...

Ok....that is enough whinning for me for now :)

Regards,

RAsylee,

Theoritically, the RTD is valid for one year, but in reality you can only use it for 6 to 9 months the maximum. Most countries require your travel document to be valid for 3 to 6 months at your departure date. Europe, for example, is required your travel ducument to be valid for at least 3 months. And Singapore is required 6 months.

On top of that you have to apply for a VISA. The VISA processing time for some countries such as the Netherlands will take 2 weeks.

I just wish we do not have to go thru all this hassel. Applying for a travel document is one thing, having to wait for 6 months to get a travel document is another thing.

The latest NSC’s processing report shows that the NSC is now processing receipted date of 4/30. In one month, the processing date for the 1-131 document only has a two weeks jump (the last month report for 1-131 was 4/17). If the pace continues that way, people who applied in mid-June this year will not receive his/her document until next January. People like me who applied in mid-August will not receive the travel document until next May. I think this is getting ridiculous.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with these continued problems that Asylee are facing? Has anyone tried to call the BCIS and received a special treatment and bypassing the queues? Has anyone tried to contact congress by emailing, calling, or writing the congress person a letter asking for help?

AP approval

I have applied for my AP in August last week and I got the approval on sept 30 th. It took only one month for me, this is my second AP.

infor24,

If AP means Advance Parole, then I don't understand why you apply fo it. Are you an asylee? Do you travel with your national passport and when you come back to the US you show your Advance Parole at the port of entry.

I thought all ayslees have to use refugee travel document.

They do. Asylees who return under AP are no longer asylees.

Gilbert,
What do you mean by no longer asylees? Does this mean that the I485 case has been dropped?
Thanks in advance.

Ynn

There was a memo by the INS legal division not too long ago stating that asylees/refugees who return via AP lose their status by operation of law and are considered parolees who have to apply for permission to work and so on.

It is a homeland security measure. They will not issue a travel document until they check your name against all intelligence/law enforcement databases.

Gilbert,

Thanks for responding to my earlier posting.

You sounded like you know a lot of info that I don't know. How do you get all this information?

I have bought my air ticket to Europe. My parents have invited 12 other people in my home countries (mostly relatives and close freinds) to travel with us. I am under intense pressure to make sure I will receive my travel document at least a month before my travel date so that I have enough time to apply for several VISAs. Otherwise, everybody will blame on me and my parents if the trip postpone. I don't want this to happen.

When my parents informed me that she invited 12 other people to travel with us, I told her that was a very bad idea. She said it is too late now. Now, you know why I am concerned about the portential delay of receiving my RTD. I think I have given myself too mush unwanted pressure. I should calm down a bit.

I think I should stop for now, I don't want people to get bored of reading this posting. Have a wonder weekend.
