All,
I am wondering if anybody has this experience. While you are traveling abroad on the RTD, what would happen if one were to lose one's RTD?

As US citizen, I know it is a given. You simply show up to the nearest US embassy and request a new one, even if you don't have copy of your existing passport. I know this happened to some people (US citizens) and they have no problem getting a new US passport and coming back to the US.

But what if it happened to an asylee on RTD? Will you be protected somewhat? Or will you be out of luck? Even if you show copy of your RTD?

You then sit and wait to get a new RTD delivered at the U.S Embassy..Also if you can argue your case well, the U.s Embassy will issue you a "resident returning visa"....That has happend to a person who has lost his green card...

The worst case scenario is that you re-apply for it and wait 4 months out of country...

I think this should be explored further as to what a person shall do..in case someone goes through this nightmare.

Travel w/RTD,Do we need a Tax Certificate??

Any experience travelling abroad for work related and do we really need the tax certificate and where can we get them?

Thanks
Gebre

If you are close to WAshington D.C. You can go to the IRS headquarters in D.C and show your i.d with SSN and they can issue you upto 5 years past tax return information.

I have done that twice..Usually if i travel, I take a signed copy of my tax returns with w-2 attached..

I have traveled many times with my RTD and no-one has ever asked me about my tax return. I won't go through the hassle of getting tax info. from the IRS. No one cares about the tax return.

I would advise you to have it just in case, you`re not losing anything.

Ok, so - if one were to be in this situation, one would need to go to US Embassy, right? Sounds like a stupid question. I guess you got nowhere else to go other than the US Embassy.

I agree with wantmygcnow that we need to probably inquire about what would happen in this case. Just as a precaution.

Y dont u email the american embassy lets say in germany and just say what happened as an example..and lets see what they say??

My other advise to folks that are traveling abroad is to always leave a COPY of your RTD and Green Card (if you have it) with a loved one. This way, if you every lose it, you have something they can fax to you as proof of your status in the USA to show the embassy in the country you are visiting.

Also, instead of taking all your tax returns, wouldn't it be easier to just take a your social security benefits statement? It shows your work history and the benefits you have earned. Technically, only tax payers accrue benefits (like Medicare and disability).

It must get tedious to constantly get a copy of your Tax statements.
