Another Renunciation Question -- How fast?

I have been a naturalized US citizen for almost 30 years. I would like to go to India for a wedding at the end of November.

I submitted an OCI application on 8/23. Yesterday (after 4 weeks) my application was returned to me with a request to send in my old Indian passport and a cancellation certificate. Based on what I saw on the indiacgny website, I understand that I can submit a renunciation form in conjunction with the OCI application.

The key decision variable is that I would like to leave the US on 11/19 (approximately 8 weeks from now). So my question is with regards to timing:

Should I proceed with the OCI application (renunciation + OCI material)?
Or should I submit a renunciation application and then get an entry visa?

I live in NYC (Manhattan), if that makes a difference.

Thank you.

I don't believe you need renunciation certificate to get an entry visa. Check with the website OR better yet, shell out $150 and go to a good Desi travel agent. They will get you an entry visa in a week's time.

Dear INeedOCIAdvice,
With the way things are, your OCI might not get processed by Nov-19-2010.
The best thing, in my view, would be to use their preferred VISA processing company that is described in http://indiacgny.org/php/showContent.php?linkid=200&partid=96&sub=sub2. As part of the Entry Visa application process, you can submit your Old Indian passport and the Surrender Certificate/Renunciation Form with required docs to get the Indian passport cancelled. Relevant instruction for renunciation form are in http://indiacgny.org/php/showHighLightDet.php?h_id=145&key=

If the Indian passport is already cancelled, you can submit the first and last 3 pages (if my memory doesn't fail me) that has the "Cancelled" stamp, in which case, the Renunciation/Surrender Cert will not be a big requirement...
The outsourcing company can be reached via phone and email and can answer specific questions in your case, in addition to all the wonderful users of this forum..

Good luck with your application

@howdy_howdy, please note that the Travisa site states:

"Former Indian Nationals naturalized before June 1, 2010: US Citizens who received US citizenship before June 1, 2010 do not have to obtain a renunciation certificate. One of the following must be produced as proof:

* Their canceled Indian passport or,
* If not canceled, then please provide your Indian Passport and a money order for $20.00 payable to Consulate of India to cancel the Indian Passport and Two (2) copies of the completed renunciation form - https://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/pdf/Renunciation_Form.pdf."

In my case, the last point is relevant: Although I naturalized almost 30 years ago, I never canceled my passport :( (I also never traveled on it again).

@gc4us, I've basically come to the same conclusion that receiving an OCI by 11/19 is too risky.
