It’s funny how man y HR people in this country are very ignorant when it comes to showing proof of eligibility to work in the US.
I just received an offer for a new job, and on the I-9, I provided a Driver License and an original social security card (not stamped “valid for employment”). The HR person argued with me for about ½ hour about the fact that I need to document to her my current INS status (i.e. show a green card, US passport, etc.). The only time I could get her off my back was to warn her that it’s illegal for an employer to specify which document I should present, nor to refuse to hire someone based on a future expiration date of a document. She finally decided to call someone to ask (why did n't she do this from the beginning?).
I told her that I have a proof of my INS status, but that’s not something I want to share with her, because as far as she is concerned, I have stisfied what the law requires (for employment). She should call me back to confirm.
I have decided not provide any thing I have as far my current INS status because that’s irrelevant, and if they insist, I will sue the heck out of them.
