Here is what murthy says:
Question : Hi, Murthy Jee. I got laid off in January after completing my 180 days of I-485 filing. Recently I got my Passport Stamped with I-551.Now If I apply for any unemployment benefits can it affect in anyway to my status in the future? Thanks
Answer : It should not affect your GC status though the safest bet is to try and work in the same or similar field to avoid any problems. After becoming a GC holder there is no bar in getting unemployment benefits though.

Question : If a person gets laid off immediately (say a couple weeks) after getting an employment-based green card and doesn"t find another job for a long time (say 1 year), is s/he in trouble?
Answer : Unlikely. The INS may be concerned about such folks using up unemployment benefits, etc. but usually it should not matter if you can maintain proof of having been laid off. Laws may change on this issue if the economy does not pick up in the near future.

I think after getting GC, one become legal permenant resident (LPR) and has all rights except voting so as per my understanding it should not be problem in future and INS doesn't care what you do after giving u GC. In ur case, it is layoff so you hv strong evidence and it should not be problem in claiming citizenship after 5 yrs. Good luck.
