I was going through a divorce. And in all that - I failed to change my address. My divorce finally got thru a month back and I was going to apply for change of last name and change of address. And thats when I read the CONSEQUENCES of failure to change address.

I am so scared as according to what I read, I have done a crime for not reporting my change of address.

I don't know how I should go about it?
Do I need to hire a lawyer or would I be deported out of US or would be imprisoned for 30 days?

This was totally an innocent mistake. I know IGNORANCE on my part doesn't justify things like this.

Please please someone advice me as to how to go about it. If I should just fill out FORM I-90 and AR-11 and send it.

Please HELP me
Thanks

As far as I know they don't really enforce that law. I also forgot to do it once and did it 3 months later. Also didn't know about the law until I read about AR-11. So far, I haven't heard anything about that.

Do you have a conditional GC or an unconditional GC? If you are still in the processing for GC, I think you should also call USCIS to change your address, in order to receive any mail that they send to you!

Thanks ...

Dear Patty.. thanks for your quick response..

I was on H4 as my ex-husband had H1 visa, and I was awarded my GC in JUNE 2000. So that means, I have UNCONDITIONAL GC. Is that correct?
I got separated last year (May 2005) and moved to a new address in JULY 2006. Till JULY 2006, I had temporary residence as things were unsure. And then I and my ex-husband filed for divorce in October.

And I got my final divorce decree this APRIL.
And so was applying for my last name change right now when I realized all this.

What would u suggest I do??
Should I just fill out form I-90 and AR-11 and send it with my application fee?

Thanks
Your replies are much appreciated
Regards

I don't know anything about name change. But as for change of address, I'm pretty sure you can just send in your AR-11. Since you don't have a pending case, there is no need to call them either.

By the way, you mean last year May 2005, right?

Anyway, stick around and wait for more knowledgable people about the name change, ok?

Good luck! :)

Thanks again

Thanks again for the quick response...

I will wait for the name change replies from other reply..

And am hopign and keepin my fingers crossed that my filing so so so LATE for change of address wont result in my arrest or deportation from this country...

Thanks once again
Regards

Just like patty said kust file the AR-11 as soon as you can and if I was you I would go ahead and call the Customer service and change the address over the phone also. Make sure you keep copies of the form that you will send, because what if they loose it and try to send the form with some kind of delivery confirmation also.

I really don't think they would deport or arrest you just because you forgot to change your address with them! Anyone heard anything else, please reply!

Also, I just read about I-90, and it seems to me that you can just go ahead and apply for a new card. If you want to wait for more replies on this, I would still mail the AR-11 as soon as possible.

I guess you could call the service number, too, as Sultan suggested, even though you don't have a pending case. Just to be on the safe side.

Now, don't worry so much, ok? You're gonna be fine. :)
