My husband does not have an original birth certificate... he says that he has always used his class 10th certifiate, which carries his date of birth, as birth certificate... will it be accepted while filing I-485? What have you guys used as a birth certificate? What document can be used in case an original certificate is not available? I read through the uscis website and the instructions in the forms, but I could not find anything mentioning an alternative to original birth certificate. As always... appreciate replies and time from you all. :)

There is no alternative to original birth certificates. However in some cases you can get affidavit from 4 people who are quite old (around your father's age). In the affidavit they just have to say that the kid is born on is date in this family and his name is later on decided as this...

But try to get one. Based on the country where u lived you can get it.

Alternative to original birth certificate

If one cannot provide original birth certificate. One should provide affidavit stating the birth, this can be done through one of your family member.

Affidavit can be given by a lawyer /attorney

Thanks for your replies guys... He has talked to his family back in India and has asked them to see if they can get one. There was one that was made at the time of birth, but no one knows where it is now... so prolly they're gonna have to get a new one made. I hope that is possible... I mean it should just be a question of registering and showing some proof (like class 10th certificate) to prove his DoB, but wonder how easy it would be when he is not physically present in India :-/

Appreciate your help guys. USC
