So, my receipt date is July 12 and I've just received my notice for "initial" interview appointment.

Is that pretty standard?

Also, where do I obtain the information on the history of the US and government so I can study b/w now and then?

What you received a probably a standard form letter. It is called initial because your case could be adjucated at that interview or may not be.

While you could study the 100 questions from uscis web site... I would suggest you read the kid's book by Kenneth David on American History and Government. Search at your local library and you will find it.
