Just discovered a reliable method of finding out about the current processing dates for a local INS office (I found out that Chicago is processing 485's with an RD of March '01). All you have to do is call your local congressman's office (you can find this at www.house.gov; find "Write your representative" and click on "identify and/or contact ".
All you need is your zip code in the 12345-1234 format and you will find contact info for your congressman. The office will tell you what the current processing receipt dates are and whether it would be possible to expedite your case (they will only expedite if your receipt date is before the current processing date).
