Alien Reg. # (A#) on passport application

I can't seem to get a definitive answer on this: On the DS-11 (passport appl.) do we need to fill this out or not? My line of thought is that once you become a USC, you are no more an alien and that number is not relevant as far as the future is concerned.

If we do need to fill it out, do you fill out "A1234567890" or just "1234567890"?

You're right you're no longer an "alien", however, that number is a link to your naturalization file. My take would be that it really doesn't matter if you write it or not, as it is my understanding that the number is printed on the naturalization certificate. If you oppose writing that number under the belief that it implies you're still an "alien", it is probably still be ok whether you write it down or not. For me it is pretty clear that you need to write it, but I also understand that the naturalization certificate is another source the passport agency might use to find that number.

For your last question, I don't know for sure, but I think it should be A123456789

My 2 cents.

Huracan hit the nail on the head - it doesn't matter whether you write it in on the application form because your A# is printed on the natz cert. (I did not fill it in on my passport appl., and still received the passport, so I know its not a big deal.)

I do have theory why the A# box is on the application form, but I'm not going to rehash it here. If you are curious, search some of my older posts covering the same subject.

I thought this question was asked (by you) and answered earlier (by the way, this place doesn't give "definitive answers" only "community answers" - none of which should be definitive).

I filled all of our applications in with A1234567890. My rationale for filling in the number even though we aren't "aliens" any more is that - well, aliens can't really apply for a passport, and, since they asked for the number, and only us ex-aliens have one, they must really want mine.

I also figured that by including the number, I might make their job a little easier. By including my A#, they can look me up in whatever databases they might have in front of them, shaving a little time off my passport processing.

Also remember, you only need to include your natz cert on your first passport application - the DS-82 form for passport renewals doesn't require original proof of citizenship (http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/79960.pdf). An A# is just something they probably want.

Why are you hesitant to fill it in? It's not like trying to hide your social security number from telemarketers - these folks are the government and it's right there on your natz cert anyway.

just do it !

Mario,
For the love of God, just do it ! We are stamped with the letters A-L-I-E-N on our forehead forever. use "A 12232323232" and kiss the form goodbye. I beg and plead to you, a fellow ALIEN to another ! Btw, where did u park your spaceship ? Mine's at jiffy lube (oil change).

Just asking the question multiple times does not change the responses. Does it? Secondly, just because you didn't like the responses to the same question you had asked earlier, does not make is any less definitive answer.

The clear answer is, yes, you need to put in your A number. If not, the field wouldn't have been on the form because only citizens came get US passport. You had the exact same answer even earlier. So, you may not find this definitive either. Take it or leave it - your choice.

Strange as it sounds, thats not quite true. There is a very small corner case where people from American Samoa and Swains Island are eligible for US passports, but are not technically full US citizens.

Anyway, just fill in your A# or leave it blank, it makes no difference - you'll still get your passport!
