alien number

I received the I797C, notice of action for AOS application filed last month and noticed an A # in the "Applicant" box right above my name. Is it what's called an Alien number. I have had an alien number through the EAD filed for OPT when I was on F1 which is different from this one on I797C. I don't have an approved I-140 yet and I have mentioned the alien # obtained through the OPT EAD in my AOS applications (I485 and G325) as advised by my lawyer.

The queries i have are:

1. Is the A # on I-797C the Alien Number?
2. If yes, is it usual to have this A # different from any previously held EAD (for OPT)
3. I intend on filing I-765 for c9 EAD. Which Alien number should i enter?

Any insight would be helpful.

A1. Yes, it is the Alien #

A2. It is usual to have different alien numbers for those two types of applications. The AOS A# that you just received will be the same one on your I-140 and AOS applications.

A3. You should use the A# that you received on your AOS receipt notices for all future use.

Good Luck!

You Should Enter the A# number on OPT while filing your I-485. They Should be same. It is an immigration identification number similar to your SSN

appreciate your responses. Though they differ but I get the point. Since at the time of filing for AOS I had the A # obtained through OPT EAD, it was logical to use it for AOS. However, since now my file has a different A #, that's the one to be used for future correspondences. Sounds reasonable? Just hope that they dont mess it up with multiple A # while checking (if they do) my immigration history.

Thanks!

The A# on the OPT EAD should be mentioned on the AOS form, but without question, USCIS will generate a different A# for the AOS application. This new one is the one you should continue to use for all future references. You are good with what you did and think.

Multiple# can create the problems later. You can visit the local office and ask them merge the numbers. Two years before some ones EAD was denied because of similar reason. During the Senator’s enquiry it was told that he has two A#. Later Local office merged the both A#.

Appreciate your responses.

This is what I have found on the issue:
A # from OPT EAD is what's called the "long form" alien number
A # from AOS application is what's called the "short form" alien number.

USCIS prefers the latter and should always be used, if available, however both work.
