Aiding & abetting an illegal alien - possible fine?

Hello. I have a female friend who recently attempted to transport an illegal alien, who are both Canadian, into the USA. The alien was banned from the United States approximately 10 years ago b/c he was charged for possession of weed. They tried to go back into the USA b/c he has family there and needs to goto a wedding. The wedding isn't for a couple of weeks, but they wanted to test what would happen if he tried to cross the border. They had no idea that they were breaking the law and thought the worst that would happen is that they would get turned away.

I am concered for both of them, but I am especially concerned for my female friend that 'aided and abetted an illegal alien'. Her car wasn't confiscated, thank god. They didn't have to spend any time in a cell. And they did not have to pay any sort of bail. They were both allowed back into Canada scott free... until October when she must go for her trial. What can she expect as punishment? I found this:

Bringing Aliens to the United States -- Subsection 1324(a)(2) makes it an offense for any person who -- knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has not received prior authorization to come to, enter, or reside in the United States, to
bring to or attempts to bring to the United States in any manner whatsoever, such alien, regardless of any official action which may later be taken with respect to such alien.

The basic penalty for a violation of subsection 1324(a)(2) is a fine under title 18, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both, 8 U.S.C.

I'm sure she isn't going to jail. At least I hope so, I'm trying to start a relationship with this girl and it would be a little difficult if she was behind bars!:) What can she expect as a fine for such a crime? what is the maximum and minimum for 'a fine under title 18'. Any searches on google just bring up a bunch of cases and trials that seem far to extreme to be relevant to her situation. And just for curiousity, what type of fine / imprisonment can her friend, 'the alien', expect?

I know this may not be the right place to post this question, but I found it while searching for 'immifration and title 18'. Any help or experience is greatly apretiated. Thanks again.

I should have just searched for 'title 18' instead of 'title 18 blah blah blah'.

I really hope you are wrong. She said that the custom agents told her that she wasn't facing jail-time and that the worst she can expect is to never be allowed into the USA again.

Thanks for the advice.
