Anyone that was granted asylum on the basis of belonging to the Ahmadiyya religious sect, please respond... Also, if someone could recommend good asylum lawyers in the bay area, I will really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Izza

Hi Izza:
I am not sure of the situation now, but 8 years ago, an Ahmadi friend of mine moved to Canada as he was having a problem with his Asylum case. He has now applied for his Canadian citizenship.

I am not aware of any ahmadiya cases. But I was told once if you can prove that you are Ahmadiya it makes the case more stronger as in the past people have claimed to be ahmadiya but could not provide any evidence. There is a Ahmadiya organization in DC and they provide verfication if you are a ahmdiya or not if you can get a letter from them saying that you are a ahmadiya it will make your case stronger.

Thanks

Ed

Thanks

Thanks for your responses, Eddie_240 and Free100. I have been married to an asylee for almost two years. His application was based on the religious persecution Ahmadis face in Pakistan. Although I have not officially converted (yet), I am considering it. However, I am too afraid, since I married my husband secretly, and my family will disown me if they do find out. My only other option would be to return to Pakistan, where I will most likely face persecution for having married out of Islam.

I have met a few lawyers here, and they have indicated that I should file for an asylum immediately. However, I would rather go with an attorney I have been referred to (and with someone who has had some experience working with Ahmadiyya cases).

Again, if someone knows of any good asylum lawyers in the bay area, PLEASE RESPOND!

Izza,

I don't think you will qualify for Asylum and have a high risk of your case being denied.

The reason

1. You are not a Ahmadiya.
2. You have not been persecuted based on your religion.
3. What is the reason of late conversion and late filing.

Lawyers will always tell you that your case is strong and you should file immediately 99% they are lying. Because they are in it for the money they don't care about your case or you they will take their fees and run the show.

You need to make sure that you have all your ducks in the row before you file for Asylum because once you do and its gets denied you will be in a worse situation. If you are financially sound then go ahead and take a chance if not if would suggest that you use precaution. If you need further info please send me a private message.

Also is your husband in proceeding on the Asylum case or has that been granted.

Regards

Ed

He was granted asylum (along with his family) in 1999. He is still awaiting an adjustment of status (his I-485 approval). Do you have any suggestions for me? Please send me a private email at khan_izza@yahoo.com.

Many Thanks
