Hi All,

My Oath ceremony is scheduled on May 30 at Fairplex, Pamona. Thanks a lot for all your help at all stages. It would not have been an easy ride with out you all.

Please help me with the 2 issues listed below. Thanks in advance.

------------------------------------
A) Steps after Naturalization

I am summing up the steps to be taken after Naturalization. Please let me know if I am missing something.

1) Apply for US Passport.
2) Inform Social Security.
3) Update the Employer of the Citizenship status (new I-9)
4) Registered to vote with my local county officials

--------------------------------------
B) US passport

I have a 12 year old son. He was born in India. What are all the documents that need to be submitted for his US passport? Are his green card, and my naturalization certificate enough for him? Please let me know. The State Dept website list is quite confusing.

Thank you all once again,
Regards,
BR2006.

Congratulations on your upcoming Oath ceremony. I think you have pretty much nailed it in all your questions. Only thing worth mentioning is that if you download the passport form the instructions are clearer on how to deal with proof of citizenship. The instructions on the website don't cover the naturalization certificate + Green Card case.

Thanks Huracan !!!

Huracan,
You are right. The downloaded form has clearer instructions. Thanks a lot.

Yes, the instructions on the form are very clear. One other thing...

If you and your spouse have differing family names (as my spouse and I do), they may come back and ask you for a marriage certificate (one of the rules is that the child must be "legitimate"). After we submitted our daughter's passport application, they came back and asked for the marriage cert.

So, you might also want to include that.

I have a question about the Social Security Card, do we submit a new application form like we did when we were issued the initial card or is there some other form to be used ?

I just showed up at the SSA office, took a number and showed my Natz Cert. The clerks clattered away at a keyboard, and, after 5 minutes said "you are all set". I didn't even fill in a form.

You can also update your status by mail, but you have to send original nat cert or us passport :(

Form is not required, it's only for information for SSA officer. You can just give nat cert & ssn card and it's ok.

If you need new SSN card (lost one or last one contained some ad about working permission or you changed your name with naturalization) they will send you within 1-2 weeks.

Updating status is mandatory and guess what, you will get 20% more retirenment pension then US Permanent Residents if you are US Citizen.

Does anyone have a link to information about this additional social security benefit for citizens? I have heard a lot about it, but I don't remember ever seeing any document to back up the claim ;)

Hi Flydog,

Yes, that's exactly the only thing I could find, and this is the description of the program. Definitely it is a benefit I wouldn't like to qualify for:

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes):
It is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income; and it provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.

For me, for now this supposed benefit of being a citizen is more myth than reality.
