After I_485 - Removal of Condition on SS Card

The SSA office in Journal Square, Jersey City, NJ is giving me crap again. They say I cannot apply for removal of condition on my SS card until I get the actual plastic card. According to them, the stamp in the passport is not enough.

Can somebody let me know if this is true?

Thanks.

PS - Two months ago, the same office tried to give me sh** by saying that my wife cannot apply for a SS card even though she had a EAD. Their reason was that her H4 is expired and she does not have a green card. They accepted the application after a 20 minute argument and we got the card in mail in 7 days.

not true

i just applied for removal of the restriction in newark on June 11..and the application was accepted..

Is it necessary to get a new SS card?

I have several friends who got GC even citizenship but still keep the old SS card. Could you tell me where you need to show it?
I think GC is enough…

It is not really necessary but it helps to make databases at Social Security and BCIS consistent. The unrestricted SS card along with a drivers license is also a valid employment authorization. I can't think of any other place where it is absolutely required. In the last 6 years, I have used my SS card only once, when I opened my first bank account.
