Your company’s HR may not care until it becomes time to satisfy I-9 requirement. If you were on H1 or EAD, you should get a notice that it’s time to update your work authorization documents before it expires. Here’s what you can do (what I did):
1. Go to the local Soc Sec. Office with your passport showing the I-551 stamp and mention that your status has changed. Ask for a new card without the restrictions written on it. You do not have to turn in your old card. I did not even bring mine. The whole thing took 1 hour (50 minutes spent waiting).
2. You should get your new card in 1-2 weeks.
3. When you get the card without the restrictions, take it and you drivers license to your HR department. They will want to make a photocopy of both for their files.
4. That’s it. You should not need to do anything else for the rest of your tenure with Acme. If your company has positions requiring security clearance, you may want to update them when/if you become a naturalized citizen.
Every time you apply for a new job, you do not need to show or mention that you are a PR. Simply showing your driver’s license (establishing identity) and Soc. Sec. Card (establishing eligibility) will be sufficient. If you want, you can also show your PR card, and that alone will be enough to validate identity/eligibility.
