affidavit of financial support

Okay,

I have some questions concerning the financial support needed to bring someone over on a K1 visa. I was told that the minimum requirements to bring someone over here on a visa was you have to make 125% above poverty level. Do they take this amount before taxes per year because Ive been corresponding with a lawyer and he said that I might need an affidavit of support or a cosigner because I didnt meet the requirements.. I ma $6000 above the required amount of $17,112 for a 2 person household.. Could anyone help me on this one because Im confused....
