Advice requested: Selective Service Status Letter

Until reading some posts, I had no idea that Selective Service was potentially such an issue. I came to the US in 1982 on an L-1 at age 34. Got my Green Card in the following year (1983, age 35). Thus never liable for Selective Service as well over age 26 from the get-go !!

I have just applied for naturalization (N-400, 2006, age 58). Should I get a "Status Information Letter" to take to the Interview (when scheduled) or would have copies of L1 entry visa + passport siffice?

Any advice very much appreciated. Many thanks.

Hello,

At the time, you were way past the age at which registration with SS was required. You should be ok without an official letter from the SS. On the other hand, it depends on the officer and his/her mood. Getting the letter is not that big of a deal. You can never be too safe and having that letter might be beneficial in the future should you ever need to get a federal loan or job. So I would get it if I were you, but I'm pretty sure you do not need it.

If you want a letter, go here:

No, you shouldn't need a SS letter -- if you didn't arrive in the US until well after your 26th birthday, there is no way you could have been required to register while you were 18-26.

In my case, I came into the country on a TN at 34 and got a GC 5 years later (after 5 years of TNs). I have no intention of doing anything about SS before my interview. I have no idea how they could possibly somehow want one.

What if someone arrived at the age of 21 but remained in some temp status like F-1 or H1B until 27? I assume a person on F-1, H1B does not need to register?

Correct. Providing you always remained in a non-immigrant visa category until 26, there was no need to register.
