advice on passport renewal and INS applications

I am getting ready to apply for I-485, and my first 3 year H-1 is expiring July 18, 2002 (may need to extend). My passport is expiring sept 2002, and I would like to get it renewed. Can there be a need for the original passport during this time?
Does anybody know how long it takes to get a PP at the indian consulate in chicago (10 years on old PP)?

Passport renewal takes only 1 week at indian consulate by mail.
I think you can renew your passport before 12 months to expiration date.

To get a new H1 Visa stamping it takes up to 6 weeks by mail. And
it can be done with in 1 year after expiration of the old H1 Visa stamping.

The order I did is, First I got a new passport, applied for I-485, and then sent PP to H1 stamping.
