My question is related to the speed of getting a conditional permanent resident status. If I marry a U.S citizen in the U.S I heard two contradicting views. One says that I have to apply for an adjustment of status but if I am not current then I would have to wait even for years for my case to become current and legally reside in the U.S. Another source says that within 90 days usually they would give the adjustment of status.

Which is true?
 
If you are married to a U.S. citizen, you are an immediate relative, and you can adjust status immediately.

The wait you are talking about only applies to non-immediate relatives, e.g. spouse and children of LPR, adult and children of citizens, siblings of citizens, etc.
 
If you married a green card holder you'd have to wait 2-3 years. But you're marrying a USC, so you don't have to wait for a priority date to become current, and the whole process would take about 3-6 months.
