Address change Form AR-11

Hi,
This query can affect everybody who is a legal resident alien including green card holder. After the sep 11 attacks INS has brought into light an old law which states that everybody who is not an US citizen has to file change of address to INS within 10 days if they move. Well I guess there must be hardly anybody who used to do this prior to Sep 11 attacks.
My question to all the gurus is:
1. what should we do who have moved prior to sep 11 and has not reported the INS about the address change ?
2. Are we in problem if we don't report the address change now ?
3. Are we still in problem if we report the address change as we have missed the 10 days dead line ?
4. Or should we report nothing and going ahead report all the address changes ?
please response
Thanks:confused:

1. yes, You should send AR -11 form now, mentioning prior address as last address reported to INS like H1 extenetion or address mention in I-140 or I-485.
2. Yes, You might be in problem, if you don't report now. they can deported you on base of that (I know they are not going to do that, but why you want to take chance) ?
3. Not necassary, don't worry about prior adderess change before sep'11th. send it now.
4. that sound crazy to me, INS won't hear I didn't new or you didn't notified us.

So go ahead and send AR-11 for safer side.

I hope this will help.

I have the AR11 to fill out but am unsure what to put in a couple of areas.

Firstly they have an area "copy number from alien card" and the space to put the number starts with an "A".

I don't have an alien number (as far as I'm aware). I'm here on a H1B and the visa in my Passport has no number that says alien number or one that starts with an "A". What do I put in this field?

Secondly they require my last address. I had 2 short term residences (max 6 weeks) before my current house and as far as I know the INS were not informed about any of them. What do I need to put here - or can I leave it blank?

Thanks for your help.

Put your last known addesss to the INS (when last time H1/ h1 ext filed, that address from the H1 application)

Thanks for your help.

Jbm,
If I have moved several times after coming to US, but am living at the address I mentioned in my application the last time I got my new H-1 stamp from Mexico, do I still have to file AR-11?

Gurus:
I read most of the stuff here. It look like every case is a case of its own.

I gave my friend address as my perm. address in NY state (I never lived there). I had never changed my address during the whole GC Process, though I moved from state to state. I still carry MI state drv licence. I gave FP at different state. Now I am residing in different state. I had rcvd GC approval.
1. Where should I go for stamping?
2. If I should go for stamping at my current address
a) Should I change INS address and drv licence etc., before going to stamping
b) Should I change INS address and drv licence etc., after going to stamping
c) Should I change INS address during stamping
3. Morever, Is it wise to wait for my wife approval also to go for stamping?

Any idea, will be highly appreciated.

Hi Mickey_32,

Hi Mickey_32

I am not lawyer, but I think consulate comes under state department and INS is different entity (it's come under DOJ) , so it won't hurt to file AR-11 form mentioning your old address on h1 petition and new address as current and send it to INS.

I am not sure how the things/ information sharing works between consulate and INS.

I hope this will help.

1. Address on gc (I-485) application. you need to update your current address to INS for I-485. Contact your lawyer for that in addition to file AR-11. So in short where you reside in that state

2. I would stongly suggest to change INS address and drv licence etc., before going to stamping (option a). Although opttion b seems good but you are taking risk, why to take risk instead of waiting, but again consulate your lawyer.

3. Don't know, consult your lawyer. or may post question in respective thread and get opinion
