Activation Time on an H1B Visa

I am on an L1B visa and recently got my H1B (till 2003). In how many days do I need to start working for this company, or can I continue with my existing work and join this company after 6 months.

Also do I need to leave US and re-enter before I start working for this new company.

I heard from my lawyer that your L-1 becomes invalid once you get H-1 approval. If you don\'t join the H-1 company, you will go out of status. It seems it is illegal to work for L-1 company even after getting H-1 approval. I am looking for a second opinion on this
