Acting as co-sponsor for nephew's wife

Hello, I was hoping someone could guide me on exactly what I would be liable for if I co-sponsor my nephew's new Italian wife for a green card. I do not think this would happen, but if it did, would I be responsible for any kind of medical expenses, rent, schooling, credit cards?? I am a little nervous about doing this, but want to help them if I can without endangering myself and my husband down the line.

Thanks, lzreilly

Izreilly,
My understanding is that your liability as a co-sponsor is limited and you are only held responsible if that person goes on welfare. Personal debt, medical expenses and college loans are not included in guarantee you provide as a co-sponsor.

Really, that would be great if that is the case. I am sure that that would never happen, so that is not an issue. I have been all over the web trying to find something difinitive on this subject, but it's been hard getting something that lays it out that simply. If anyone else has a differing opinion on this, I would appreciate hearing about it.

Thank you!

Sponsor will be required to pay off any FEDERAL benefits (like welfare and medicaid) if it'll be a case. In this case Government will come after the sponsor. All other expenses will be the beneficiary's problem.

Thank you KittenKat.
Also, the responsibility is for ten years or until the beneficiary becomes a US citizen.

Or until you have 40 points with SSA. :) If the beneficiary already have 40 points (s)he does NOT require a sponsor. I wish I had! :D
