About going back to school

What would happen if a student does not show up for classes when the semester starts? Would the student lose his status as a current student and have problems with immigration or would this just make him lost the entire semester and had to wait to resume classes next semester?

Given that this is my last semester we have arranged direct study with some instructors and there is no need for me to be on campus for there is not real classes to be present, so technically I don't need to be there.

Do you know or have had a similar experience where you could not show up for class on the required date? if so what did you do? What do you advise?

Thanks

You would most likely be reported to ICE/USCIS as a "no show" since failure to show is considered a serious issue for national security. Few instructors have the authority to waive attendence on campus. What are you really going to be doing?

You are right as far as registering after initial entry or when attending class is necessary. From the sound of his post, it seems like he is a Graduate student who is working on his thesis after finishing all physical classes. In this case, all he needs is to register for 1 credit hour in order to stay active. He can even go home to work on the thesis and come back to defend it later. This is how it's done at the school I am attending, but I think it is pretty much the same way everywhere else.

If he is an undergrad, then there is really no reason for the above scenario. Thesis is usually not a requirement for a bachelor program, and if so, it is usually built in so it is done at the last semester of the curriculum.

One last thing, taking online classes is a gray area. It doesn't require attending physical classes. In that case, as long as he is doing the work, I think he is fine. Check with the DSO for sure. They should know the answers.
