I am sorry to say but this sounds like some one is trying to rip you off for $1000 here. I don’t think that this person has your NL.

You could ask him to open the package and read out the Case Number on the letter. Tell him that you need this to confirm with KCC that this is the genuine package, and that you will come with the $1000 to pick up the package if you can confirm this is your genuine case number.

If he gives you the case number off the letter then you can contact KCC with the case number and your personal details, if they reply you know you have the correct case number and that’s all you need from that package.

You can change your address with KCC and report this guy to the police for trying to black mail you or something like that.

I have to say though It seems very doubtful that this person has a NL for you. If indeed it is for DV2008 then the letter was sent last year and you may have already missed your interview, as you don’t know your DV2008 CN you don’t know when your interview is or was.

Try your best to get a case number and we'll see later what we can do :)

Interviews are arranged only after KCC receives forms DS230 and DSP122 . So if by any chance JUDIBOAT has in fact won the lottery it isn't too late, KCC might still be able to arrange an interview.A full 6 months are left till 30'th September.

How did you report it to KCC? Did you phone them? Did you send a letter? If you had phoned them what did they tell you and what did you tell them? Did they say they will send you a new NL?

Of course you are correct. He/She could not have had an interview scheduled until he has returned in form's IF he was a winner. I never thought of that! ;-)

JUDIBOAT > you need to get that CN ASAP every day that goes by will lessen you GC chances. Once its Oct 1st 2008 then chance of your green card is gone, and you are back to 50/1 chance of winning the next lottery.

Our economy and in fact our modern day culture here is very much based on and depends on the US. If the US is suffering we will to. 25% of our GDP every year comes from US direct foreign investment.
Due to the fact that we are native English speakers then there are many US European HQ’s located here. Such as Google, Microsoft, and Intel to name but a few.

To be honest its just as hard for some one from Ireland to obtain a green card as it is for any one else, so people can “want to relocate to the US” all the like, the reality it is that they just cant.
Our economic out look is not great, but its not one of recession just yet, we are projected to have economic growth of 3% this year so that is still a long way from recession so I think people will be happy enough to stay here in Ireland for now.
There were only 50 GC’s issued to Irish people in DV2007 out of a possible 160 NL’s issued. I guess that speaks for its self …………..

Nice to know. I don't know if Ireland is a part of the EU but i would imagine that it would be alot easier for you folks to relocate to other european countries if u wanted to, probably the Uk although i heard the influx of eastern europeans into the UK is causing alot of economic strains. Anyway, your number probably should be current in June. Wish ya luck.

Hi there,

I've just stumbled across this forum in my quest to find info about the DV lottery (I've entered in DV2009). My head was spinning with CPs and AOSs, but I think I'm beginning to get a handle on it... lol. you guys seem to know your stuff, albeit you seem to speak a whole other language!

Alemitee, like you, I'm Irish / Irish born and I'm confused about what you said:

"50 GC’s issued to Irish people in DV2007 out of a possible 160 NL’s issued. I guess that speaks for its self ………….."

Does that mean you think us Irish have a good chance or poor chance of winning the lottery??

It did occur to me that perhaps if not many Irish entered I'd have a better chance!

Congrats on getting your GC by the way!

Alemitmee's numbers don't say anything about the chance to win the lottery... They prove that many Irish winners decide not to leave their country after all and didn't pursue their DV application after having received the notification letter.
The winners are not selected by country but by region (in your case Europe) so it doesn't matter how many people from Ireland take part in the lottery.

Did KCC actually confirm that you've one ?? did they give you a CN at all. If it's really true that you actually won then it's worth paying this BLACKMAILING Amount of $1000 to pick it up(if you desperately want to LIVE in America). But before you pay this money do make sure that this person who is blackmailing you shows you the documents with your name boldly written on it .A similar thing happened to a friend of mine who won the 2007 lottery. He was fortunate enough as KCC sent a new pack to his address in England. You are running out of time so you need to act really fast.

Igmu is absolutely correct here, I was not trying to predict odds, I was just trying to illustrate how the Irish economy was doing though pointing out that there were may DV winners that decided for what ever reason it was not worth their while following up on their DV win. This was in relation to Johnkent’s question in relation to the Irish economy, I thought that this fact may help to summarise that the Irish economy is not doing too bad ….

I of course still want to live in the US, its not just for economic gain, its just something that I have always wanted to do, call it a personal adventure or whatever ….
And for the record the odds of winning the DV lottery are:

1.2 mil / 260000 = 46 that’s about a one in 46 chance of being selected base on last years numbers. :-)

Hi, thanks for replying, that clears things up.
Yeah, the Irish economy is in reasonable shape it would seem, plus we have the added bonus that we can run amok all over the EU to our hearts content looking for jobs if needed!

What do people plan to do with their prospective green cards? Looking at these forums I see people talking about the dangers of changing jobs soon after getting your green card etc. I was under the mistaken impresssion that with a green card (if obtained without a job offer in the US, i.e. own funds or an affaidivit of support) meant you were free to enter the States and work as a binman if the desire took you.

I am still tiring to figure out where to go with my GC. I have been checking out salary.com to get an Idea of my potential earnings in various cities across the US. Most recently I was checking our various parts of CA. I am getting very excited about my salary potential. Even with the 3/4 years experience that I have I recon that I could be looking at a salary in the region of 70/80k in the US! That is just crazy, I know the cost of living is high in CA compared to other parts of the US but those are still very good prospects if you ask me!

Given that the GC allows you to work anywhere any state and so on really the sky is the limit. If I can get a decent salary I would be able to keep my apartment in Dublin and just pay the mortgage each month! I will initially be planning to stay in the US for a minimum of five years. But after that I reckon It will me be impossible to come back to Ireland. I actually grew up in the UK so leaving Ireland won’t be all that big a deal for me.

I have my interview now on the 17th of June cant believe that its almost here!

This is not a mistaken impression, you can do this. Remember that getting a GC through the DV if you beat the odds and get selected, is one of the least complicated immigration routes there is. Its all decided on the day at the interview.
I have been reading up on US immigration for years and have come across horror story after horror story of people battling to try and extend visas and get the coveted GC. With out the lottery win it is near impossible to get a no stings US work authorisation. I abandoned the idea of a H visa as I decided it was just not worth the stress of it. I said that the only way I was going to go to the US was a PR or not at all.

I don;t know about that I submitted an Entry for myself and 5 friends. And Already received 2 NL. I think the odds are higher.
Just for reference Im from the South America Region.

I am a DV2008 winner and got my visa. dohko8 was very lucky to get 2 winners out of 6. The winners are randomly selected.
alemitmee, I want to say you helped me much in the process. My case number was also high and I spent really long time thinking if I would be current before the end of the fiscal year. This year, European numbers moved so fast that I got my visa before the summer. Your postings were so helpful and it was nice to feel that I was not alone. You said you have been searching for places where you can earn and live the best. I have been working as a software engineer for years. I believe that California is one of the best places. I have been to South California before for a little time, it was nice. I also liked the houses and the climate. Seattle also seems to be a good choice, if you are a software developer. I know that Ireland is also the IT center of Europe, and you must have a nice job there. If you let me know about the living and working conditions, and especially about the jobs and IT sector in California after your arrival (considering you will be living in California after you get your visa, of course), I will be glad.

Well the odds will change depending on how many people apply and how may people are selected from each region. Also you can only really work out the odds in hindsight as the details of numbers are not published till the summer after all the NL’s are sent out.

The odds I was quoting were specifically for the EU region and only for DV2008. The odds for the other regions / different years will obviously different. To figure out the odds of winning the DV based on last yeas statistics you would have to find out how may qualified entries were received from your region and divide that by the Number of NL’s for your region. I really don’t know what these figures were for SA region for DV2008 so cant really speculate to the odds of wining in that region last year. If you find the figures you can work it out! :-)
