A Techie Tip !

For those geeks out there.

When you save a fillable PDF file it does not save the fields that you enter or fill, and the only way for most folks to save a copy of their N400 application is to have a spare printout or a photo copy...

For those who want to save a SOFT COPY (instead of taking many printouts) of your N400 applications , or ANY application here is a simple procedure..

1. When you issue the print commmand on the N400 application (PDF file), check the option where it says "Print to File". (Windows only ;) )

2. Save the file with a .ps extension (POST SCRIPT)

3. Get GhostView reader
http://www.gnu.org/software/ghostview/ghostview.html

4. Open the .ps file in this reader and you have a soft copy of your application forever.. You can take a print out of this at any time

If you insist on having a pdf version
Upload this file to www.ps2pdf.com and get a pdf version

Cheers
Rahul

Saving N-400 form on a disk

Hi,

I'm not sure if you need a newer version of Adobe or the full version, or perhaps the version of the N-400 form has been updated since last year, but, I have had no problems saving my file on a disk or on my computer with the fillable sections intact.

I also do not believe I did any thing out of the ordinary, however, I do know that I have the full version of Adobe Acrobat with Distiller, that could be the problem.

I think Ghostview needs Ghostscript to run. You can convert from PS to PDF inside Ghostscript/Ghostview. Once you open PS file in GSview click on File> Convert> and select PDF from the drop-down menu. I have been doing exactly this for the last 4 years!

My 2 cents

I wouldn't use the fillable form. It causes confusion. For example, it does not let you have two current jobs in the form. I have two jobs, but the fillable Acrobat form forced me to enter an end-date for the second job (You cannot type "present") and so it caused confusion ....

You can fill that part alone by hand

You can fill that part alone by hand. I had similar problem. For example it
won't allow to to enter text instead of a date (from date:xx/xx/xx to: present).
But fillable forms are so useful. Otherwise there is so much scope for mistakes.
I used acrobat (full version).
Best option is: gather all the information for n-400 and then use Acrobat reader as a substitute for typewriter.

I agree with chanakya,

Gather it all, then use the fillable form and you can handfill anything else. Nothing beats a professional looking laser printout!

I have the N400 filled form saved on my disk ( I do also have Adobe Acrobat full version that came with my computer). I was able annotate the form the way I wanted without any problems. I agree that a laser printed form looks very good and I would recommend it if you have access to a computer with Acrobat.
(I just got my oath date :) )

PDF Creator

Hi Rahul, thanks for starting this thread. I started looking into this, and came across a PDF Creator on ebay. He sells many of those, starts at $1.99 and goes for $3 and shipping - would cost around $6. Since it was not much I ordered, and am loving it. This will install as a printer, and you can print a document to that printer, which in turn prompt for file name. Of course, a product by another geek. Good and smart.
