"A man's(immigrant's) enemies are the men (immigrants) of his own house." (Micah 7:6)

In the ongoing debate on Immigration, I find the vociferous brouhaha raised by erstwhile or current immigrants to be ludicrous. They who have once obtained the benefits are now carping and championing the cause to cut-down immigration. Very sad. :(

Here is what I read in the San Francisco Chronicle:

But some immigration observers say making life easier for would-be immigrants should not be the government's first priority. Yeh Ling Ling, director of the Oakland-based Diversity Alliance for a Sustainable America and herself an immigrant from Vietnam, believes the United States lacks the resources to absorb more immigrants. She opposes the Senate bill, both for its expansion of legal immigration and for its offer of legal residence to illegal immigrants. "If the Senate amnesty bill becomes law, we can expect 12 million illegal aliens to apply and, once naturalized, they can bring in their family members, spouses and children," said Yeh. "You cannot invite people to your house for dinner if some of your kids are starving."

Poon:

I would just ignore that "stupid" lady for one good reason. That, she safely
forgot the house she is referring to, is built by those so called "people"
and those "people" shall be allowed inside the house to be "rewarded"
for the work they did to build the "house".

She also "safely" forgets the fact that, when she was one of those "people"
who were invited into the "house", the house was still with starving kids and
that the kids were "fed" by the "people" (both inside and those "invited"
into the house) by working together to feed everyone in the house.

This is like a guy on h1, gets his greencard and works for few years and
gets laid off and he tells the unemployment officer that "all the non-immigrants on h1 took his job so he is jobless".

She is ignorant and "ignorance is bliss", right guys?

poong,

This is not surprising at all to me. It is a reflection of human nature. Very few people have the the will to identify and care about things that do not affect them directly. Even people who go through hardships in the past tend to stop identifying with others that may be in similar situations currently.

A lot of immigrants who have gone through this process successfully are at the forefront of anti-immigration drives. It is amazing how one forgets where they come from and what they had to go through to become PRs and citizens. Its almost ridiculous that they would try to make things harder for new immigrants. But hey, look at it from their view point. Now that they are PRs and citizens, they want the pie for themselves. They don't want more immigrants to come into this country and compete with them. You can find ample examples in this forum itself. A lot of people who preach about the fairness of the system and about how immigrants need to shutup or packupare those that have been fotunate enough to get out of the system and become PRs and citizens. It is very easy to pick them out with the tone of their posts and their attitude towards us "new-immigrants". I hope I don't become the same when (IF) I ever become a PR or citizen. I know that its easier to sound truly unselfish than to actually be unselfish when hardships are over. One can only hope that it doesn't happen to all of us.

regards,

saras

Iam for legal immigration.

Some want illegal immigrants for cheap labour and not paying any benefits, but don't their children/Family 'drain' resources for education/emergency hospitals. They will be happy to have the 'status quo'.
