Hi everyone, I am a Canadian citizen marrying an American citizen. My Fiancee is actually a student in post Graduate studies and I was wondering how I can move there to the states after we get married. Our families are supportive and will help us. I do understand that in order to sponsor me he will have to show that he can support me but will my family's share (Canadian) also be considered?

Is there anything we can do now before we get married in May 2014? I do plan on living here in Canada until right after our wedding.

I do not intend on giving up my Canadian Citizenship, is permanent residency my only option?

Thanks in advance!

What do you mean "your family's share"? Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents can be joint sponsors. And it must be income that will continue after you immigrate, so any income you may have now won't count.

Not really. You have two options:
* Get married and then go through consular processing. It will take about a year after you file before you can get a green card, during which time you will stay in Canada. You may be able to visit him in the interim but it is not guaranteed.
* Get a U.S. fiancee visa (K-1) and get married in the U.S. and file for adjustment of status in the U.S. This way you will stay in the U.S. after you're married, but you will not be able to leave the U.S. until you get Advance Parole (takes 3 months after you file) or the green card.

From your description, it sounds like Fiancee visa might be better for you.

No. You can naturalize. Neither the U.S. nor Canada care about any other nationalities you may have or get.
