8th year of H1B, options for GC

My situation:
Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering (2004) worked as a Software Engineer from 2004 to 2012 (8 years). H1B (2005) and EB3 filing for I-140.

Masters in Business Admin MBA (2011) and had to switch careers to Finance because I got laid off from Engineering job but stayed in same company. Finance work experience (past 2 years and couple of months).

I-140 became current last year when I worked in Finance but the company lawyers said that because it was filed for an Engineering role in a different city, I cant use that for GC, but they can extend H1B with that.
Current H1B extension valid for another year and company has said that they wont extend beyond that.

Is there any options for me for a Green Card through an alternate route? I am going to see lawyers next week, but wanted to get some information from people with experience on this issue before I go see them.

Thanks

Green card is for future position and it can be different from your current job. If the priority date is current you can file I-485 if you are in US or file I-824 for your I-140 petition to move to nearest US consulate so that you can go for consular processing.

My EB3 was filed by my employer and their stance is that short of me going back to a similar role that I was in when they filed for my I-140 (software engineering) they wont file for the i-485 based on my current role being in finance.

Can I file for the I-485 by myself even though its employment based?
