Every body here is saying that the maximum a green card holder can stay outside the U.S. is 6 months. But the INS site says I need a re-entry form only if I plan to stay outside for more than 1 year. What If I want to leave for 8 months, do I need a re-entry form? Is that what the INS says?

Thanks

If you stay outside for more than 6 months but less than one year,
you don\'t re-entry permit but you will have to go thru a full
inspection when coming back tio the USA.

And you may also lose all the accured waiting time for
citizenship applications.

What do you mean when you say full inspection? would like to know as I am already out of USA and am planning to be away for more than 6 months but less than 1 year.

Put simple, 1 year is limit.
with I131 filed prior to deparure 2 years is the limit.
Good idea to file I131 (though not a requirement) for more than 6 months.
Admission is never guarenteed though likely in some cases.

Though this has been discussed too many times, I still
want to know how the INS really do an inadmissibility
check when one come back after 6 month say. Does the PR
needs to fill some form like I-485 with thoes Yes/No
questions or the inspection is done in a very informal
manner? Anyone can post his/her experience?
